Translation of Bāzdīd - A Poem by Munib-ur-Rahman

 My translation of one of Munib-ur-Rahman’s signature poems. I love its imagery and its dark romanticism. Munib Sahib passed away yesterday at the age of 98  

Recurrent Vision (Bāzdīd)

If you come to me,

come shrouded in dusk,

bringing that old feeling at evening’s threshold

when the trembling shadows of voices withdraw,

and the eyes, rankled by futile desire,

watch each moment as it passes by

and hold tight to a delusional hope.

If you come to me,

come wrapped in darkness,

as boughs brush the dewy window panes,

and the winter moon barges in with an intimation,

though all is silent,

and the doors are shut.

If you come to me,

come resplendent in light,

with that same ecstasy of conclusion,

as desire cries out from an unknown dread,

and the murky silence of unspeaking lips

turns into a cruel reality

that transmutes existence into pain.

باز دید

تم جو آؤ تو دھندلکے میں لپٹ کر آؤ 

پھر وہی کیف سر شام لیے 

جب لرزتے ہیں صداؤں کے سمٹتے سائے 

اور آنکھیں خلش حسرت ناکام لیے 

ہر گزرتے ہوئے لمحے کو تکا کرتی ہیں 

خود فریبی سے ہم آغوش رہا کرتی ہیں 

تم جو آؤ تو اندھیرے میں لپٹ کر آؤ 

شبنمی شیشوں کو سہلائیں لچکتی شاخیں 

اور مہتاب زمستاں کوئی پیغام لیے 

یوں چلا آئے کہ در باز نہ ہو 

کوئی آواز نہ ہو 

تم جو آؤ تو اجالے میں لپٹ کر آؤ 

پھر وہی لذت انجام لیے 

جب تمنائیں کسی خوف سے چیخ اٹھتی ہیں 

اور خاموشیٔ لب سیکڑوں ابہام لیے 

ایک سنگین حقیقت میں بدل جاتی ہے 

زندگی درد میں ڈھل جاتی ہے

tum jo āo to dhudhalkē meN lipaT kar āo

phir vohī kaēf-e sar-ē SHām liyē

jab laraztē hæN sadāōN ke sisaktē sāyē

aōr āNkhēN KHaliSH-ē hasrat-e nākām liyē

har guzartē hue lamhē ko takā kartī haēN

KHud-farēbī se ham-āGHōSH rahā kartī haēn

tum jo āō to aNdhērē meN lipaT kar āō

SHabnamī SHīSHoN ko sehlāyeN laCHaktī SHāKHēN

aōr mehtāb-e zamistāN koi paēGHām liyē

yūN CHalā āye ke dar bāz na hō

koyi āvāz na hō

tum jo āō to ujālē meN lipaT kar āō

phir vohī lazzat-e anjām liyē
