In "`America First' and Global Conflict Next", Nouriel Roubini explains why Trump is exactly the wrong president for
the US to have in today's world. We'll just have to hold our breath and
hope he shuffles off the stage before irretrievable damage is done. I am
increasingly pessimistic about that. I think that, for several reasons,
the US is entering an extended "banana republic" phase. Trump is just
the catalyst for that. There is, of course, no historical precedent for a
global superpower making such a transition. All the examples given -
Greece, Rome, the Soviet Union - are very different. This will truly be a
new phase in world history. Interesting times!
