And it is indeed rooted in the need to keep justifying the theoretical basis of Pakistan - the bogus two-nation theory. It has kept Pakistani society in a permanent state of cultural schizophrenia.

AS for India, it is a far more complex, deeper culture just because of its greater size and diversity. But I regret to say that it too seems to be veering off into the wilderness. Of course, it will never become anywhere near as lost as Pakistan, but I think there's a real danger of not living up to its potential. The corruption, the paranoia, the celebration of superficiality, lack of social and civic responsibility are all rife in India. That is not the path to super power status.Ali Minaihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14364109441184435016noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135134425417686130.post-2879982413465404982013-06-30T19:13:59.715-07:002013-06-30T19:13:59.715-07:00Could one make an argument that what has kept Paki...Could one make an argument that what has kept Pakistan from getting *unstuck* is a deep rooted identity crisis and self-hatred where there is a suffocating denial of our Indian/Hindu roots and history coupled with an equally overbearing emphasis on just a religious identity. After all, India and Indians right next door to us are on a trajectory to be an economic, and perhaps world, power.

From the various observations, like the original post here, it seems that Turks, like Iranians, celebrate their pre-Islamic history as much as they cherish their Islam heritage.sharpasandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15467046509257743921noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135134425417686130.post-83230992669638072312013-06-30T19:10:13.041-07:002013-06-30T19:10:13.041-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.sharpasandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15467046509257743921noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8135134425417686130.post-43976159490789689722013-06-30T13:19:25.578-07:002013-06-30T13:19:25.578-07:00Naseem Bhai, yes, you definitely get the feeling o...Naseem Bhai, yes, you definitely get the feeling of being in a place that has been at the center of history for thousands of years - which it has. To me, Turkey was like what Pakistan could be, if only we had sense. The people, the culture, the kebabs - we share all these - but alas, not the good sense to create a dynamic society. I was also reminded a bit of the Pakistan of my childhood, which you would remember much better. I think that a direction similar to that of Turkey was possible then. Now, I doubt it.

Roomi Apa, thank you. You should definitely visit Turkey. It is worth visiting repeatedly. However, even a cursory tour makes you feel historically connected and overwhelmed with grandeur and beauty.

It somehow makes you feel that perhaps the origins of all of our deeper dreams (i.e. those of Muslims of Indo-Pak/South East Asia) lie in this place - that our psyche is deeply influenced by historical events and greatness that was achieved here ..NaseemAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
